How to Efficiently Store and Organize Holiday Decorations in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Step 1: Tidy Up Existing Decorations

    1. Disassemble all your decorations.
    2. Sort decorations into boxes (use cardboard boxes or clear plastic bins).
    3. Label the boxes!! Trust me, you’ll think you’ll remember what’s in each box, or that it doesn’t matter. You won’t—and it does.
      • Labels should be brief. Indicate where the decoration goes and what it is. For example, "Living Room Tree Ornaments" or "Outdoor Lights."
    4. After labeling, stack all the boxes into a pile but do not put away yet.

  1. Step 2: Sort Through Decorations You Didn’t Use This Year

    1. Go through all unused decorations.
    2. Ask yourself these questions:
      • Do I still like this?
      • When was the last time I used it?
      • Am I holding onto it because of emotional attachment, even though I don’t use it?
    3. If you have an emotional attachment, place the item in a separate Seasonal Memory Box so it can be preserved.
    4. Keep in mind that seasonal decorations deteriorate over time. If you're holding onto something you don't love simply because there's no alternative, it's time for a change. Purchase a new decoration that you like and either donate or dispose of the old one!

  1. Step 3: Store the Decorations You Want to Keep

    1. Put away the decorations you still use and those you want to keep, but didn’t use this year.
    2. Double-check that everything is properly labeled for easy access next year.
